About Clare
State Senator & Assistant Majority Leader
Clare Oumou Verbeten is a proven champion who puts the fight for racial justice and human dignity at the center of her legislative work. In her first term, she helped lead the historic DFL trifecta that passed landmark laws like the PRO Act (protecting Minnesota’s reproductive freedom) and North Star Promise (tuition-free college). Clare serves as Assistant Majority Leader for the Senate DFL Caucus and as Vice Chair of the Judiciary and Public Safety Committee.
A Career in Public Service and Advocacy
Prior to her election, Clare dedicated her career to public service. She previously served as the Equity Manager at the City of Saint Paul and as the Chair of the Roseville Area Schools Foundation, where she fought to eliminate racial disparities in city government and address critical unmet needs for students.
Clare's experience as an organizer, including work for progressive candidates across the state and her family's history with labor unions, instilled in her the importance of collective action and economic fairness.
Fighter for Justice
As a Black woman, a daughter of a Senegalese immigrant and a retired public school teacher, the fight for Black lives is deeply personal and informs her legislative priorities. Clare is committed to passing policies that ensure every Minnesotan has safe, stable housing, accessible healthcare, and a strong community.
Clare lives in Saint Paul’s Como neighborhood with her husband, Garrison, her son, Leo, and their goldendoodle, Honey.
